Recommend a Show Idea to Oprah!
Send an e-mail to the Oprah Winfrey Show to suggest
a show about the National Marrow Donor Program!

http://www.oprah.com/email/reach/email_showideas.jhtml
It just takes a few minutes to fill out the online form.
You can help us spread the word about the Marrow Registry!
On the Oprah Web Site there is a page with a simple form, where you can send your suggestion for a show idea! Please visit the Oprah Web Site and suggest they do a show about the National Marrow Donor Program! This will only take a few moments of your time, but can potentially save many lives! You only need to write a few sentences, in your own words, encouraging them to do this show!
14 year-old Pittsburgh girl, Amy Katz, is currently fighting Leukemia. A bone marrow transplant is the only known cure for Amy's Leukemia, but so far there is no match for her in the marrow registry. Amy was the inspiration for Amy's Army:  a dedicated group of volunteers, who have organized successful Marrow Drives in Pittsburgh, PA., and across the US. www.amysarmy.org
I urge you to recommend Lisa & Amy Katz to be guests on the Oprah show! Amy's mother, Lisa Katz, is a well educated, articulate, and passionate spokesperson for the Marrow Registry! And 14 year-old Amy has shown great courage and strength in dealing with her Leukemia. This mother and daughter team would make excellent guests on the Oprah show, and would illustrate to the world the importance of the Marrow Registry. This would bring much needed attention to the National Marrow Donor Program!
Please visit the Oprah Web Site today, and write a few sentences
suggesting a show about the National Marrow Donor Program,
featuring special guests, Lisa & Amy Katz from Pittsburgh!

Together, we can help save lives!
Thank you for your help!
A Request from Lisa Katz, Amy's Mom

Dear Friends,

I am writing to you because one of the biggest lessons we have learned in our journey these past 18 months is how important it is to raise awareness and educate the public about the National Marrow Donor Program. Most people don't know it is something they can do and that being tested is as simple as giving a small vial of blood.

With 30,000 patients out there every year searching for a donor and 70% of them needing to turn towards the marrow registry...we need to constantly increase the number of donors to increase potential matches for patients like Amy with leukemia, and others with aplastic anemia, sickle cell anemia and other life threatening blood related diseases.

Here is where you can help. One of our supporters would love to see us get on the Oprah show. Not just for Amy..but to raise awareness for all the patients looking for their marrow donor. Oprah reaches an incredible audience and has the power to motivate and move people into action.

Statistics speak for themselves...5 million on the Registry since 1987. Over the past 18 years...20,000 unrelated transplants performed, yet 30,000 looking each year. The statistics are against finding the match. The more donors we get registered..the better the odds of transplant and saving lives.

The plan is to have everyone we know and everyone you know...write a brief email to the show and encourage Oprah to do a program about the importance of the National Marrow Program and educating the public.

You can mention Amy's Army as an example of a small group trying to find a donor for Amy and helping others in the process. Please refer her to the website: www.amysarmy.org.You can mention any of the above statistics. A paragraph is all that is needed.

We want them to sit up and take notice. If 1000 emails were received the first week in April..that would be something for them to think about! Won't you please help us help so many in need.

Just click on this link... http://www.oprah.com/email/reach/email_showideas.jhtml and submit the idea for a show on The National Bone Marrow Donor Program.

Your help is greatly appreciated. If we all target our suggestions for the first week in April...we could have a huge impact. Please forward this email to everyone you know and let's continue to make a difference!

Thank you!

My E-Mail to the Oprah Show, by Deena Alansky

April 5, 2005

Dear Oprah,

Please consider devoting an episode of your show to the National Marrow Donor Program! Each year, 30,000 people search for a Marrow Donor from the National Marrow Donor Registry as their last hope of survival...to cure Leukemia, Lymphoma, Sickle Cell Anemia, and many other blood related diseases. By dedicating an entire episode to the NATIONAL MARROW DONOR PROGRAM, the Oprah show can help save many lives!

Volunteers from minorities, which are under-represented in the marrow registry, are especially needed. People are most likely to find a match from someone of their own ethnic background. Oprah can help to educate the public about this great need, and encourage all eligible people to join the registry! I know that many lives will be saved if this episode is broadcast to millions of viewers!

I highly recommend Lisa Katz and her 12 year-old daughter Amy Katz, as guests for the Oprah Show. Lisa's daughter, Amy has been fighting Leukemia for almost 2 years now. So far, there is no matching marrow donor for Amy in the marrow registries anywhere in the world. This led to a grassroots community organization, called Amy's Army: www.amysarmy.org.

Amy's Army is a group of dedicated volunteers, who have been organizing successful Marrow Drives in Pittsburgh, PA and around the US. Lisa Katz is a well educated, articulate, and passionate spokesperson for the National Marrow Donor Program. And 12 year-old Amy has shown incredible strength and courage in dealing with her battle against leukemia.

On February 18, 2004, I lost my only brother to Leukemia when a matching marrow donor could not be found. YOU CAN HELP US EDUCATE THE PUBLIC by choosing to devote an entire episode to the National Marrow Donor Program. As more people join the National Marrow Donor Program, more lives will be saved! Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Deena N. Alansky,
Pittsburgh, PA.
