Hi! My name
is Deena N. Alansky, and I am proud to announce that on June 13,
I graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh with a degree in
Multimedia and Web Design. One of the requirements for graduation
was the creation of a digital portfolio, complete with biography.
So here it is: the story of my life.
I was born in
Youngstown, Ohio in 1961. My family moved 8 times while I was growing
up, due to my father's job with a chain of department stores. But
eventually we settled in New Castle, PA., where I lived for 6 years
until my High School graduation.
I moved to Pittsburgh
in the Fall of 1979 to attend school at the University Of Pittsburgh.
I fell in love with Pittsburgh, and have lived here ever since!
from the University Of Pittsburgh in 1983 with a Bachelor's Degree
in Psychology, but my major emphasis was in Child Development. I
had always adored children, and ended up working with children for
the next 17 years.
In the Fall
of 1987 I returned to college for 2 years. I had always loved art,
and I enjoyed working with children, so I decided to study Art Education
at Carlow College. But teaching jobs are hard to find, and I continued
working in child care.
Over the years,
I held various positions. I founded and operated two family day
care homes in two different locations. I organized families into
day care cooperatives. I worked with abused and neglected children
as a parent counselor/child development specialist. And I spent
6 years as a private nanny.
I finally decided
that it was time to really CHANGE my life! Although I love children,
I felt frustrated by the low pay, and lack of challenges
in my life. I knew the only way to change my career would be to
go back to school, and learn new skills.
So, in the Fall
of 1999, 20 years after my High School graduation; I enrolled full-time
at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. I chose the major of Multimedia
and Web Design, since it combines so many of my passions: art, design,
color, photography, music, video, etc.
I started out
with absolutely NO PREVIOUS COMPUTER KNOWLEDGE, but after 2
1/2 years; all that changed. I developed a wide range of
new skills in diverse areas, such as: web and graphic design, image
manipulation, digital sound and video editing, and interactive multimedia
programming. With these newfound skills, I hope to begin my new
career as a Multimedia/Web Developer.
I have learned
that it's never too late in life to return to school and change
your career. And through hard work and dedication, and the support
of family and friends, I am proud to be reaching my personal goals.
It has been
difficult and challenging, but never before in my life I have found
anything this much fun and this rewarding as the field of Multimedia
and Web Design. I am excited about my future in this field, and
looking forward to facing all the new challenges that await me!
